Transport Vehicles
Transport vehicles are capable of carrying troops or equipment across the battlefield. Units are impervious to enemy fire while on board a transport. A transport's carrying capacity is based on the number of squads, not the number of units. A single Servitor will take up as much space in a Rhino as a fully kitted out Space Marine Squad. Note that some units, such as Fire Dragons, count as multiple squads. If a transport is destroyed with units inside, the units are unloaded intact around the slagged vehicle. If the transport is in the process of jumping and is destroyed, the units inside are deployed to the nearest passable terrain.
Units are stored in the transport, or bunker for that matter, in the same mode in which they entered. This means that a squad that enters a transport under a healing aura will continue to heal at an increased rate while transported. Units also exit a transport in the same state they entered, so if a squad with weapons that require a setup time, such as Heavy Bolters, enters a transport with its weapons already set up it will exit the transport in the same manner, ready to fire right away. This is easiest to achieve by loading the squad in the transport, unloading them so they stand in a group right next to the transport and let them set up their weaponry, they load them back into the transport without needing to move them. When next they are unloaded, they'll be able for fire right away without a setup time.
Tactics
Transport vehicles are an effective way to shield your commander during games with the Assassinate Victory Condition enabled.
Transports are as a rule faster than the units they carry. On larger maps, races without quick transport methods such as deepstriking or bunkering must rely on their transports to ferry troops from their base to the front lines in a timely manner.
Transports can also be used as battering rams against enemy lines. Enemy infantry will move out of the way of incoming vehicles, allowing you to simply charge empty transports into enemy lines to force their infantry to spend time parting for your harmless vehicle. This trick can be made even nastier by loading the transport up with powerful melee squads first then unloading them once the transport is in the middle of the enemy formation, bypassing the usual need to wade through incoming enemy fire to get your melee troops into combat.
Be careful around Necron Lord Destroyers when using transports. If a Lord Destroyer begins possessing one of your transports with units inside, those units will be instantly ejected, quite possibly out in the open where they can be quickly gunned down.
Some transports have more specialized tactics that don't apply across the board. Check their respective pages for more specific information on getting the most out of them.
