Summoning Core
The Summoning Core forms the nexus of an intangible Necron teleportation grid, allowing most infantry units to relocate to any fixed Necron presence on the battlefield, as well as providing the necessary focal point for the resurrection of more advanced Necron soldiers. Necron Warriors and Wraiths can also channel energy through this network to dramatically increase their own power.
Tactics
Since the Necron Warriors and Flayed Ones need this building alive in order to teleport to friendly structures, destroying the Cores should be a high priority for anyone attacking a Necron base unless all of their forces are in the base already. Otherwise, these surprisingly powerful units will probably all teleport to the base en-masse and pound your attackers flat. You may consider this a useful diversionary tactic, by sneaking in a force strong enough to do some damage to a Necron base and make them attack the Core, then when the Warriors and Flayed Ones teleport in you simply make the diversion force retreat, giving whoever the Warriors and Flayed Ones were attacking some breathing room. However, smart Necron players will realize that the Flayed Ones can be Deep Struck back out almost immediately. At least the Warriors are still stuck plodding along.
The best defence against this strategy is to simply build more Cores, as there is no limit to how many you can build. As long as one survives, teleportation is possible. Because Summoning Cores also provide a control radius, building extra Cores may be necessary as your base expands if there aren't enough secure Obelisks near your base to build at.
This building provides the all important disruption field upgrades as well as giving the summon ability to the Necron infantry. Disruption fields 1 and 2 should be purchased as soon as possible if you run 2 or more squads of warriors. This makes the free-to-produce Necron Warriors as durable and damaging as possible. There aren't many units that can take Necron Warriors with Disruption Field 2 in a firefight due to their incredible durability, damage increase, and range increase. It becomes available once a Greater Summoning Core is constructed, which is Tier 2.
The Wraith Flight upgrade, for a mere 75 power, is also worth considering. It increases the armor of the Wraith substantially, in addition to a movement speed and "We'll get back up!" chance increase. Against most races, Wraiths aren't used very often unless Take and Hold is a victory condition or the opponent is a range heavy army such as the Tau. Other conditions that could warrant the purchase of this ability are: Opponent uses lots of stealth units, such as Tankbustaz, Infiltrated Scout Marine Squads with Sniper Rifles; Opponent is playing an Infantry heavy Imperial Guard but does not yet have Ogryns; or the opponent is using a Dark Reaper heavy Eldar strategy. The Wraithflight upgrade can make the difference between your Wraiths dying en route to engage enemy ranged units, or that split second that you hit phase shift at the right moment when your Wraith has about 5 HP left.
