Pathfinder Team
"We will be your eyes and ears."
Members of the Pathfinder Team are the true scouts of the Tau army. Often working in conjunction with Devilfish Troop Carriers the Pathfinders function as forward spotters for the rest of the army. With their superior sight radius, Pathfinders are ideal for supporting Fire Warrior Teams and Skyray Missile Gunships by spotting enemy units.
Should a particular troublesome opponent come along, the Pathfinder Team can use their markerlights to help their brethren focus their fire better.
Pathfinders are one of the three detector units of the Tau army, the others being the Vespid Stingwing Strain and the Ethereal.
Pathfinders take 40% more morale damage than other units.
Tactics
Pathfinder Teams are support units that have three specialized uses:
- detect infiltrated units.
- provide vision at an increased range for Fire Warriors and other long-ranged units.
- allow priority targets to be quickly eliminated.
In addition, their Pulse Carbines slow the movement speed of advancing enemies. But because of their low health and short range it is safer to keep them away from enemies.
Pathfinder Teams should only comprise a small part of your force as their firepower and durability are limited. Mark Target is best used on an enemy commander, vehicle, or elite heavy infantry such as Obliterators or Terminators. Allowing the quick destruction of a powerful unit will make the Pathfinder Team cost-effective even if they do not survive long.
When considering reinforcing the squad, remember that they are costly and that they do very little damage to enemies. Also the true purpose of the Pathfinders (detection, sight and Mark Target) can be achieved without reinforcing. However, reinforcing the Pathfinders does increase their survivability. With just two units in the squad, they can often be taken out before there is time to respond. More units also increases the slowing effect of the Pathfinder's Pulse Carbines.
