Kroot Carnivores
"The Shaper has sent us to serve."
Though the Tau favour ranged combat over the barbaric maelstrom of melee, they have realized it is sometimes unavoidable. The Tau themselves are not suited for close combat, so for this purpose they recruit their long-standing allies, the Kroot, to fight with them as auxiliary units. Occasionally regarded as barbaric by the Tau, they do however play a vital role in the armies of the Tau Empire and fight for the greater good. Members of the Carnivore kindred, these Kroot are one of the most adaptable of all the Kroot families.
Note: In Dark Crusade the Kroot Carnivores have a build cost of 180 0 2 .
Tactics
The primary use of Kroot Carnivores is as a meat shield to tie up enemies so your Fire Warriors can safely attack from range. They are relatively fragile, though have a large squad cap. While they can efficiently grind through most unsupported ranged infantry, they need to be reinforced continuously to survive larger engagements and should always be supported by Fire Warriors. Always attach a Kroot Shaper from Tier 2 onwards to increase health and regeneration, cannibalize the corpses of fallen enemies, and research Feral Leap to disrupt enemies upon attack. Cannibalize, though important as both a quick heal and research-style health upgrade, should be used carefully as once activated the Kroot will move towards any fresh corpses visible on the battlefield. This may lead the Kroot into heavily-contested areas within range of Turrets or massed enemy troops. To prevent yourself from accidentally launching a one-squad attack on the enemy base, watch Carnivores closely while this skill is active.
Due to their high squad tax and weak attacks, many players choose not to build Kroot Carnivores early on, relying on Snare Trap to hold enemies down and massive ranged firepower to kill them. When playing against primarily ranged forces, it can be useful to use Kroot Carnivores, overwhelming the enemy units while Fire Warriors take them out from afar. Most of the time a balanced force of Fire Warriors and Kroot Carnivores is an effective strategy (usually a 2 to 1 ratio), especially so if the Carnivores have Feral Leap and are placed slightly behind the Fire Warriors to surprise charging enemy units.

Effects | The Carnivore squad moves to the nearest pile of gibs in sight and starts feasting on the remains of fallen infantry units. (This can include your own units). This gradually provides a bonus to health of all Carnivore squads on the battlefield, not just the one doing the cannibalizing. This bonus is applied to any new squads of Carnivores that are built and is retained even if all Carnivore teams on the field are slain. The maximum bonus that can be achieved in this way is +300. | |||
